Gear Shifting System Information

A gear shifting system is a useful feature for riders who like to pedal, extend their ebike's range, and travel over hilly terrain. Click a heading below to learn more about gear shifting and how to shift gears on our bike.

Gear Shifting Information

Many of our models are equipped with a derailleur and use a Shimano 7-speed gearing system and thumb shifter. The shifter on the right side of the handlebar controls the rear derailleur, which moves the chain from cog to cog, changing the way the bike rides.

How Shifting Affects Pedaling

Shifting down to a lower gear moves the chain to a larger cog. Shifting down before slowing or stopping the bike can help make it easier to start pedaling again. Shifting into the lowest gear (gear 1, or first gear) when riding uphill can help make climbing easier.

Shifting up to a higher gear moves the chain to a smaller cog. Shifting up can help a rider propel the bike farther and faster with each pedal stroke, but will require more effort from the rider. Shifting into a higher gear will help maintain pedal authority at top speeds.

The combination of gearing, the 5 levels of variable pedal assistance, and the twist power assistance from the motor means you can always find the most efficient gear, pedal level, and power to go the distance!

How to Shift Gears

  1. With the bike stopped in a safe area, identify the two controls on the shifter at the handlebar. Do not attempt to shift up or down when at a complete stop. Only shift up or down while riding.
The "+" button near the base of shifter is used to shift "up" and move the chain at the derailleur to a smaller cog every time it's pressed, making it easier to ride downhill.

The lever on the shifter is used to shift "down" and move the chain at the derailleur to a larger cog every time it's pressed, making it easier to ride uphill.

  2. To shift up, begin pedaling, and press the "+" button to shift into a higher gear. This will move the chain to a smaller cog on the derailleur with every button press.
  3. To shift down, continue pedaling, and press the lever on the shifter to shift into a lower gear. This will move the chain to a larger cog on the derailleur with every lever press.
